Cary Cochenour

Cary Cochenour is a marching instructor, choreographer, drill writer, and clinician based in Houston, Texas. Returning for a second year on the Santa Clara Vanguard visual staff, Cary brings over a decade of experience in visual and movement education. His work reflects a deep commitment to marching excellence across a wide range of scholastic and independent ensembles.

Cary serves as a staff member and choreographer with several outstanding marching programs across the country, most notably with the Seven Lakes HS Band (TX). Since 2015, he has been instrumental in the rapid growth of the marching band and indoor ensembles, which were recognized in 2024 as a UIL 6A State Finalist, a BOA San Antonio Super Regional Finalist, and the recipient of the prestigious Sudler Shield for excellence in marching music.

He has also maintained a long-standing role with the Norwin HS Band (PA), where he has been part of the program since his time as a performer. Serving as an instructor and choreographer since 2011, Cary has contributed to the group’s competitive successes, including multiple BOA Regional Champion awards, BOA Class AA Champion awards, and Outstanding Visual Performance in Finals awards. Norwin has consistently been a BOA Grand National Semifinalist throughout his time with the program, and was named the 2021 BOA Grand National Class AA Champion. Starting in 2025, Cary will serve as Norwin’s drill writer in addition to his instructional roles.

During the winter season, Cary has contributed to the establishment of several successful indoor colorguards and drumlines throughout the Houston Area. He writes drill for multiple indoor ensembles across the country, including Jordan HS Indoor Percussion (PSO), which he helped found in 2024. In their second year of existence, Jordan HS earned the bronze medal at the 2025 TCGC State Championships and was named a WGI Houston Regional Finalist.

Cary previously served on world-class visual teams with Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps and Rhythmic Force Indoor Percussion (PIW). He is a proud alumni of Norwin HS, Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps, and The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, where he performed in the trumpet section.

Cary was a classroom teacher in Katy ISD for nine years before working full time as a visual instructor and designer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Education from Saint Vincent College and maintains active teaching certifications in both Texas and Pennsylvania. He resides in Fulshear, Texas, with his wife, Devyn, and their puppy, Eko.
