Jeremy Van Wert
Interim Co-Executive Director
A former SCV A-Corps quad player, Jeremy has remained involved in the drum corps activity as an author, instructor, health and wellness consultant, and volunteer since aging out in 1998. Licensed in California, Jeremy has a masters degree in Marriage, Family, and Child therapy and over a decade of mental health experience providing therapy, crisis response, advocacy, suicide prevention, and intensive services for individuals with chronic and profound mental illness in the greater Sacramento area. Jeremy also has a masters of business administration and is the Vice President of Residential Services and Business Development for Summitview Child and Family Services in Placerville California.
Jeremy currently lives in Foresthill California with his wife Sheri and remains involved in building appropriate mental wellness support for member corps of DCI. Jeremy is an alumnus of the Spirit of Sunnyvale Marching Youth Band (90-94), attended Homestead High School, marched in the SCV Cadets (95), and SCV A-Corps (96-98). Jeremy also leads fundraising efforts for the Art Velarde Memorial Scholarship that has covered the out of pocket costs for several SCV percussion members. Jeremy is an optimist, a supporter, a connector, and a creator who believes that with thoughtfulness, positivity, and energy, humans can dream, innovate, and build impossible things.
Interim Co-Executive Director
Michael Kovalich is the business director for the Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices of Miami-based Greenberg Traurig, LLP, a large law firm with offices throughout the US and worldwide. He also serves as CFO for SPARC International, a consortium of computer chip manufacturers, and is co-owner of a fitness studio in Los Gatos.
Mike’s interest and enthusiasm for drum corps began in his youth. Mike participated in the Hilltoppers Drum and Bugle Corps in his hometown and went on to play solo soprano for the Imperial Guardsman of Livingston, New Jersey. Mike has been involved with Vanguard for eighteen years and has held been heavily involved as a member of the SCV Board of Directors. He served as chair of the Vision 2000 Strategic Committee, and has also served on the Finance, Bingo and Pacific Procession Committees.
Mike has participated in other non-profit organizations as board or committee chairs for Junior Achievement, San Jose Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts of America, and the San Jose Chamber of Commerce and Masons. Mike holds a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from California State University at Hayward.
Being involved with the Vanguard has been an enjoyable experience for Mike, who admires the values and traditions that promote and exemplify exceptional, championship-level performances year after year, earning Vanguard its reputation as the most innovative drum corps in the world.
Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Michael Gaines grew up with the pageantry arts all around him. His post high school education included a degree in Finance from the University of Dayton, as well as a Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Academy of Art University.
From 1998 to 2011, Michael was the drill designer and visual coordinator for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, and served on the design team for all 7 of their Drum Corps International World Championship titles. He currently creates for marching bands and stage shows, as well as indoor winds, percussion, and color guards in the United States and Asia.
In April of 2007, Michael was inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame, and in August of 2011 he was inducted into to the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame.
His designs have been featured by several high school Bands of America National Champions, with the most recent being the 2016 BOA Grand National Champion, Carmel HS from Indiana. His work was also on display with several groups at WGI this year, including the 2017 Independent World Class Champion Pride of Cincinnati, the Silver Medalist Aimachi, and the Scholastic World Champion, Carmel HS.
Michael currently resides in San Francisco, CA.

Being in love with music her whole life, Patty began her journey through the music scene in Stockton, CA during her years at University of the Pacific where she studied Business Administration with a concentration in Arts & Entertainment Management. Intrigued by the logistics of booking shows and music festivals, Patty began her career in Event Management. From planning events on and off campus to volunteering at a local non-profit music venue, she found an opportunity after graduation to work at large scale music festivals through Insomniac Events. Working festivals from California to the East Coast, Patty truly embraced the music and experiences of every event.
Since relocating to the Bay Area, Patty now works full-time in the Vanguard office helping out with administrative duties and managing all VMAPA events.
Rowena joined Vanguard Music and Performing Arts in December 2018 as a Senior Accountant. Previous to that she worked at The Parkinson’s Institute and Clinical Center for 17 years as an Accountant, Payroll Administrator and Accounts Payable Specialist. Prior to that she worked at Mass Precision Sheetmetal, Bell Industries and Vita Insurance all located in the Bay Area. Before migrating to the United States, her previous work experience was at the PIA/Office of the Press Secretary and St. Luke’s Medical Center both located in the Philippines. She graduated with a BA degree from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and has a Legal Assistant/Paralegal diploma from Blackstone Career Institute.

Performing Arts Program Manager
Daniel has served the Vanguard organization since 2017 as the Digital Media Associate with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps.
He is a local music educator, and currently works with Fremont High School as their Marching Band Program Coordinator and Winter Percussion Director. During his inaugural year as Winter Percussion Director, Daniel led Fremont High School to be the 2019 CCGC champions as well as recipients of the Shirlee Whitcomb Award (most growth and improvement for the season). Daniel also performs regularly with the San Jose Wind Symphony, SJSU Clarinet Ensemble, and Sharks Drum Corps (whom he co-manages).
In addition to music performance and education, Daniel operates the AV media company, “Made for Marching”, which produces specialized content for music-oriented organizations. His clientele includes San José State University, The Winchester Orchestra, Pasquale Esposito, and many other performing arts organizations.
Kale is a Bay Area Native, born and raised in San Jose. He started his Drum Corps career in 2011 with The Vanguard Cadets, where he marched until 2015. In 2017, he participated with Vanguard in the 2017 Tournament of Roses Parade, and later joined the A-Corps Support Staff for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He was instrumental in the operation and functionality of Miss Amana and continues to manage all fleet and facility needs at the Vanguard Hall.
