Charles is an Austin, Texas native and a Vanguard Alumni. He marched two years with Santa Clara Vanguard in 2001 and 2003 and continued his music education at Texas State University as a Trumpet Performance Major. After college he worked as a professional musician in Phoenix Arizona where he was also worked with the Arizona State University Marching Band for 4 seasons.

When not performing or teaching music Charles created a career in the print and graphic design industry. After more than 12 years in the industry he stepped away as Production Manager to join Santa Clara Vanguard full time.

Charles rejoined Santa Clara Vanguard for the 2013 season as Tour Director and quickly moved to California to create the Vanguard Performing Arts program that includes private lessons, Santa Clara Big Band, youth brass ensemble, and the Vanguard Brass quintet.

After becoming the Corps Manager in 2014 and then Corps Director in 2016, he is now the Executive Director and will continue to guide the vision of the Santa Clara Vanguard.

Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Michael Gaines grew up with the pageantry arts all around him. His post high school education included a degree in Finance from the University of Dayton, as well as a Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Academy of Art University.

From 1998 to 2011, Michael was the drill designer and visual coordinator for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, and served on the design team for all 7 of their Drum Corps International World Championship titles. He currently creates for marching bands and stage shows, as well as indoor winds, percussion, and color guards in the United States and Asia.

In April of 2007, Michael was inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame, and in August of 2011 he was inducted into to the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame.

His designs have been featured by several high school Bands of America National Champions, with the most recent being the 2016 BOA Grand National Champion, Carmel HS from Indiana. His work was also on display with several groups at WGI this year, including the 2017 Independent World Class Champion Pride of Cincinnati, the Silver Medalist Aimachi, and the Scholastic World Champion, Carmel HS.

Michael currently resides in San Francisco, CA.

Annette has been a marching member of the Vanguard (1982-1987) and the B-Corps (1981), Alumni Corps member (1997, 2002), Alumni Winter Guard member (2003), SCVAA Steering Committee member, Booster Club member, Cook for Miss Amana, and Souvie volunteer. Annette holds her B.A. degree from SJSU.

Sandra took over the bingo operations in the Fall of 2005. With her diverse education and experience, she has successfully grown the net income, computerized many aspects of the operation and closed several loopholes in addition to improving the volunteer experience. Sandra is responsible for all the “behind the scenes” aspects of the bingo program necessary before the lights are even turned on. Sandra holds a B.S in Engineering Science, specializing in Electrical Engineering, from SFSU. Sandra has considerable marketing and sales experience from her days in R&D, and later composing bids for computer systems to monitor and control power for electrical utilities. Sandra also spent several years substitute teaching math and science while her children were in K-12 grades. Sandra’s husband, Dean, lends a hand around the hall and volunteers at bingo at least once a week.

Sandra & Dean’s daughter, Caitlin, was a colorguard member of the Vanguard Cadets in the summers of 2003 and 2004. That was their introduction to the wonderful world of drum & bugle corps.

Michael first joined the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2013 as a communications intern writing blog posts, taking photos, and managing social media for the A Corps. In 2014 he landed a summer internship with Drum Corps International, but returned to SCV for the summer of 2015. Now Michael has relocated to California from the midwest and he is looking forward to working in the office full time.

Michael is a recent graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Ben was born and raised in Ames, Iowa then relocated to Brooklyn, NY in 2013 upon completion of his double major double minor at the University of Iowa.  In New York City, Ben works as a Performer and Operations Manager for Gallant Entertainment Inc. (GEI) and is the Percussion Director for The Brooklyn Steppers.

As a performer for GEI, Ben has performed at multiple high-profile events including Super Bowl XLVIII, the 2015 NBA All-Star Game, and the 2016 U.S. Open, and he has played for four seasons with the Giants and Knicks Drumlines. As Percussion Director for the Steppers, Ben is spearheading the reestablishment of the BKSteppers Drumline and collaborates annually with Spike Lee for Spike’s “Prince Born Day” block party honoring the life of Prince.

Being in love with music her whole life, Patty began her journey through the music scene in Stockton, CA during her years at University of the Pacific where she studied Business Administration with a concentration in Arts & Entertainment Management. Intrigued by the logistics of booking shows and music festivals, Patty began her career in Event Management. From planning events on and off campus to volunteering at a local non-profit music venue, she found an opportunity after graduation to work at large scale music festivals through Insomniac Events. Working festivals from California to the East Coast, Patty truly embraced the music and experiences of every event.

Since relocating to the Bay Area, Patty now works full-time in the Vanguard office helping out with administrative duties and managing all VMAPA events.
