Sep 5, 2019 | News, Santa Clara Vanguard

Vanguard Music and Performing Arts is very excited to announce a strong core of returning Design Staff and Caption Leadership, as well as a few exciting additions for SCV in 2020!

“I am beyond thrilled with the team we have put together for 2020,” said Michael Gaines, returning SCV Design Team member. “Not only are most of our major positions being filled with individuals returning to take on the 2020 season, but we have injected a ton of excitement and freshness with the addition of a few talented professionals who already fit right in with this team.”

Gaines will once again pull double duty as VMAPA Creative Director and SCV Drill Designer, leading the visual program alongside Andy Toth, who is returning for his 4th season as Visual Coordinator, and Bart Woodley, who will once again be serving as Visual Consultant. Scott Koter will be celebrating his 5-year anniversary with Vanguard, and we are looking forward to his continued leadership and expertise in the role of Program Coordinator!

Paul and Sandi Rennick, fresh off their 4th consecutive Fred Sanford Award, will return as Percussion Arrangers alongside Evan VanDoren, a new addition who will be filling the role of Brass Arranger. Paul will also be taking lead as Percussion Caption Manager, assisted once again by KJ Stafford. Back on the brass side of things, Mark Nichols will reprise his role as Brass Caption Manager, and will be assisted by another member of the Van Doren Family, Katie VanDoren, who is entering her first year with the Vanguard. We are also very excited to welcome Donnie VanDoren to the team in 2020, who will be lending his knowledge and expertise as Brass Consultant.

“I am honored to work alongside these incredible designers and teachers for 2020. I have been so impressed with the creativity and clarity of Evan’s arrangements over the years, and I truly look forward to what he will bring to the table,” said Koter. “I have no doubt that Mark Nichols, Team VanDoren, and the rest of our incredible new and returning brass faculty will do amazing things for the 2020 SCV hornline!”

Michael Rosales will continue to make waves as Lead Choreographer, challenging performers to step outside their comfort zone and explore new styles of movement. And with Matt Hartwell returning to his role as Visual Caption Manager, assisted by Donnie Hull, there’s no doubt Vanguard’s visual program will remain strong. Daniel Riley, is once again back to lead the SCVCG in his 8th year as Color Guard Caption Manager, assisted by Florida resident and longtime collaborator Laura Gasper. Last, but certainly not least, we are beyond thrilled to have Wayne Harris returning to offer his skills as Performance Coach.
