Corps Director

Rob Shetland is the Instrumental Music Director at Buena Park High School in Orange County, CA where he teaches Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and AP Music Theory. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education in 1994 from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), and in 2009, he received his Master of Music degree at CSULB after studying wind conducting with Larry Curtis and John Carnahan.

In his twenty-three years of professional experience, Shetland has developed many successful programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels since 1995. He was a member of the Sacramento Freelancers Drum and Bugle Corps in the 1980s and 1990s.

Chris Roberts is a San Francisco native and member of the Society of California Pioneers. As a Vanguard Alumni (YEARS) he has been an active volunteer and most recently performed with the SCV Alumni Corps at DCI Semifinals in 2017. Bitten by the pageantry bug in 1989, Roberts was a double-major in Music and Engineering, and has gone on to use those skills in various roles with marching band management teams at high schools across the Bay Area. Most recently he served as a Program Coordinator for Lynbrook High School.

Roberts has been a self-employed entrepreneur for over 25 years, developing multiple companies and consulting for other business owners through Roberts Motivation International (RMI). Chris and his wife live in the Bay Area and together they have 5 children, 3 of which were members of the Vanguard Cadets Horn Line in 2018.

Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Michael Gaines grew up with the pageantry arts all around him. His post high school education included a degree in Finance from the University of Dayton, as well as a Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Academy of Art University.

From 1998 to 2011, Michael was the drill designer and visual coordinator for The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, and served on the design team for all 7 of their Drum Corps International World Championship titles. He currently creates for marching bands and stage shows, as well as indoor winds, percussion, and color guards in the United States and Asia.

In April of 2007, Michael was inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame, and in August of 2011 he was inducted into to the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame.

His designs have been featured by several high school Bands of America National Champions, with the most recent being the 2016 BOA Grand National Champion, Carmel HS from Indiana. His work was also on display with several groups at WGI this year, including the 2017 Independent World Class Champion Pride of Cincinnati, the Silver Medalist Aimachi, and the Scholastic World Champion, Carmel HS.

Scott Koter retired as assistant superintendent for the Kiski Area SD in 2016 and previously served as a principal and band director in the same district beginning in 1982. His ensembles received numerous honors including appearances at the Midwest Clinic, MENC, IAJE and PMEA conventions and captured numerous state and BOA regional titles while being named BOA Grand National finalist seven times and a Grand National class champion two times. Scott received citations for teaching excellence from PMEA, NBA, IAJE as well as Duquesne University, St.Vincent College and California University of PA. During Scott’s teaching and administrative tenure, Kiski HS was named as a Grammy Signature School and the district was named as a Best Community in Music by the NAMM Foundation multiple times.

Scott has served as program coordinator for the 2018 DCI World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard since 2016 and from 1999-2015, he served in that same role for The Cavaliers of Rosemont, IL winning five DCI world championships during that time. He also serves as a creative consultant for Fannin Musical Productions and as an educational consultant for Innovative Percussion Inc. Scott was inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame in 2015.  He is humbled to be a part of the SCVC Family.

Matt Hartwell has been a member of the SCV visual staff since 2010. His DCI experience started with Capital Regiment in 2004 and finished with The Cavaliers from 2005-2008. For WGI Percussion, Matt has worked with George Mason University Indoor Drumline (2010-2013), SCV Winter Percussion (2014-2016) and currently serves as the Visual Caption Head at Pulse Percussion.
In 2007 Matt had the honor to perform with and teach the Aimachi Marching Band from Nagoya, Japan. In 2010, he had the extreme honor of designing a production for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said’s Royal Guard of Oman Marching Band. He was also hand-selected to design the program for His Majesty’s 40th year in Power celebration and a private dinner performance for His Majesty and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. Each spring Matt produces a marching band stage production for Busch Gardens Williamsburg called “Mix It Up!”.
Matt is currently a full time visual designer, adjudicator, and clinician for marching bands and indoor drumlines. He resides in Long Beach, CA and is originally from Salem, VA. You can visit his website at www.matthartwelldesign.com

Fred received his bachelor’s degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music, and is an alumni of the Vanguard organization. He first began in 2002 with the Vanguard Cadets as a snare drummer, and then went on to march in the A-corps from 2003 through 2005. He has been the music coordinator, front ensemble composer/arranger, and electronics designer for the Vanguard Cadets since 2013. Fred has worked on various film scoring projects including “Transformers 3”, “Need For Speed”, “Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery 1 & 2”, and was arranger for the 87th Academy Awards. He is currently working on Marvel’s “Agents of Shield”, Disney’s “Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”, and is the main composer for HBO’s “Halfworlds”. Fred lives in the Los Angeles, CA area with his wife, Sasha, and their son, Freddie.

A native of Springfield, Virginia, Ryan Adamsons is based in Chicago where he is an active performer, composer, and educator. Before joining the brass staff for the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2012, Ryan spent five years as a marching member of the Bluecoats (1998-2002), and seven years on the brass staff of the Bluecoats (2003-2008, and 2011) among other groups.

Ryan has received Bachelor of Science Degrees in Jazz Studies and Brass Performance from the University of Akron, and also graduated with distinction from DePaul University in Chicago with a Masters of Music concentrating in Jazz Composition. An award-winning composer and sought after clinician, he has taught numerous groups in the United States and Japan. He currently works as an Artist Advisor at the Denis Wick/Vandoren Musician’s Advisory Studio in downtown Chicago, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Jazz Orchestra as their Director of Educational Programs. Ryan also chairs the mentoring program of the Jazz Education Network, a project aimed at fostering young jazz musicians in various fields of study and industry. He plays Powell Signature Trumpets exclusively.

Jenny is entering her second year as Color Guard Caption Manager for the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets. She has been with SCVC since the 2015 season, when she started as a technician. Jenny has served as a color guard technician and caption head at several programs throughout Southern California. Most recently, she directs the color guard programs at University and Aliso Niguel High Schools.

As a performer, Jenny marched with several drum corps, including Pacific Crest and The Academy, before having the privilege of aging out with the Santa Clara Vanguard A-Corps in 2013. She was also fortunate enough to perform with the Santa Clara Vanguard Winter Guard from 2013 to 2015 and become a bronze, silver, and gold WGI medalist, respectively. Jenny’s time within the Vanguard instilled in her a passion for the organization and color guard activity that she hopes to pay forward to her students.

When she is not teaching her color guard students, Jenny is a freelance writer. She has her B.A. in Literary Journalism from the the University of California, Irvine and currently contributes to several outlets, including Winter Guard International.

Jenny has loved her time with the Vanguard organization in her capacities as both a performer and educator. She is thrilled to be continuing to serve as Color Guard Caption Manager for the 2017 season and Vanguard’s 50th Anniversary!

Residing in Los Angeles, John spent 1993-1996 drumming under the direction of Mike Jackson in both his high school drum line & the Velvet Knights Drum & Bugle Corps’ final season in 1996. That winter he attended Riverside Community College, marching for multiple exhibitions including the Hollywood Christmas Parade & 1997 Tournament of Roses Parade.

During his 18 years as an audio engineer John has won a Grammy; mixed live broadcasts for political figures including President Obama, President Bush, & Hilary Clinton; been a consultant for Paramount Pictures Studios; & systems tech for Avid at concert events featuring Duran Duran, Moby, Flaming Lips, & other artists. He is currently the monitor engineer for the United Artists Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown LA. He lives down the street from the Rose Bowl in the Pasadena area with his girlfriend & their dog.

Catherine (Cathy) Flores from Long Beach, CA has marched with the Vanguard Cadets for five years (2014-2018). She also participated in the 2017 Rose Parade with the Santa Clara Vanguard. She is currently studying Hospitality and Restaurant Management and enjoys baking. This will be her first year on staff.

A fierce proponent of the arts, Thomas Hubel is currently pursuing a degree in Music Education from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in Stockton, CA. He is in his second year teaching brass with the Homestead High School Marching Band in Cupertino, CA, as well as trumpet faculty with the Pacific Community Music School.

Thomas is principal trumpet of the University of the Pacific’s award-winning Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and is a charter member of Pacific’s 28/78 New Music Ensemble. He has performed with the Stockton Symphony, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Heavy Ensemble, and UOP’s Jazz Ensemble, as well as in venues including Carnegie Hall, the Hawaii Theater, and Stockton’s Take 5 Jazz Club. Thomas has appeared live in concert with Frank Ticheli, Carmen Bradford, and Yoshiaki Onishi, and in masterclasses with Mark Inouye and John Pearson.

Born and raised in Santa Clara County, Thomas is an alum of both SCVC & SCV – beginning in 2014 and aging out in 2018 as trumpet section leader and soloist. Thomas was the recipient of the Golden Foot Award and the Mike Korten Memorial Horn Award in 2018.

Thomas is absolutely thrilled to be joining a star-studded SCVC staff and hopes to continue to grow and learn from an organization that has given him so much.

Paul Lujan is a trumpet player and music teacher based out of Fresno, California. He attended California State University, Fresno where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Music Education. While at CSU, Fresno, he studied trumpet with Dr. Nathan Sobieralski and was a member of multiple audition-only scholarship ensembles. He has worked as a brass and visual technician for multiple high school bands in the Fresno area, including Bullard High School, Clovis North High School, and El Diamante High School. He also teaches private trumpet lessons, working with students from ages 8 to 30. In addition to teaching, Paul works as a freelance trumpet player, playing for GPG Publications as a recording artist and for local high school and collegiate musical theater productions.

Paul was a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard drum and bugle corps for the 2013 and 2014 Drum Corps International seasons, where he marched lead trumpet and performed across the United States with the corps. He also marched in the 2017 Tournament of Roses parade in with the Santa Clara Vanguard. Upon aging out of DCI in 2014, Paul joined the administrative staff of the Vanguard Cadets drum and bugle corps as an Assistant Tour Manager up until the end of the 2017 DCI season. He looks forward to spending another summer with the corps and getting to work with a talented group of students and a great educational team.

Michael Weber graduated from UNLV with a Bachelor of Music Education. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Michael has played trumpet for over 12 years and is an active performer, teacher, drill writer, and music arranger around the Vegas Valley. He has performed across the country and internationally with Drum and Bugle Corps Santa Clara Vanguard and Blue Devils International. He can be heard on his Brass Quintet’s new album “Twin Peaks Brass”, as well as the Grammy Nominated UNLV Wind Orchestra’s most recent album “The Return”. Michael is looking forward to his 2nd year with SCVC and is excited to be working with the talented staff and performers.

Trumpet Artist Buddy Deshler is an ambassador for the transformative powers of the arts, champion of living composers, and agent for change in the instrumental music field. His bourgeoning career has taken him around the country, as well as internationally, and has allowed him to share the stage with ensembles such as the King’s Brass, The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass, Foden’s Band of Sandbach, Cheshire, his own Vice City Brass and Marquee Brass, and as of 2017, the illustrious Dallas Brass.

In addition, Buddy has performed with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, York Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Washington Chamber Orchestra, Concert Artists of Baltimore, American Festival Pops Orchestra, and more. His international performances have taken him to Le Domaine Forget in Quebec, the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, and Santiago de Cuba.

His musical endeavors have given him guidance and association with artists like Jose Sibaja, Chris Castellanos, Demondrae Thurman, Jens Lindemann, Joe Burgstaller, Martin Hackleman, Sam Pilafian, Andrew Hitz, Lance LaDuke, Rex Richardson, Matt Niess, Kevin Gebo, Phil Snedecor among many others.

As a performing artist for XO Brass, Denis Wick of London, Smith-Watkins cornets, and Torpedo Bags cases, Mr. Deshler tours nationally, conducting lectures and clinics everywhere from middle school through college students. His educational programs and masterclasses focus on sound pedagogical approaches to practice and the business acumen necessary for a modern career in music. His clinic, “The Entrepreneurial Student”, instills the idea that one can develop and execute the skills necessary to jump start a career in music while still being a “student” and has been presented at multiple colleges throughout the United States.

As an educator, Mr. Deshler serves as the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of “The Fredericksburg Brass Institute”, a weeklong summer music festival offering a rich immersion in master classes and seminars, large and small ensembles, instrument exhibits, participant recitals, and free concerts featuring renowned guest artists. As of 2018, Mr. Deshler also serves as Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Tidewater Brass Institute in Virginia Beach, VA. Deshler is also an active member of the International Trumpet Guild by occupying the role of Youth Day Coordinator as well as being a frequent session host.

Buddy presently resides in Midlothian, VA as an active freelance musician and educator. He holds a B.M. in Instrumental Performance and an Artist Diploma from the Frost School of Music, University of Miami and an M.M. from the Peabody Institute, Johns Hopkins University. His primary teachers have included Phil Snedecor, Craig Morris, and Josef Burgstaller.

Bryan Bass is a performer and music educator in the DFW area. Residing in Arlington, Texas, Bryan is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is currently the principal horn of the UTA Symphony Orchestra and the UTA Wind Symphony, and he was a drum major for the 2016 Maverick Marching Band.

Bryan is also a proud alumnus of the Santa Clara Vanguard organization, marching the A-corps on mellophone in 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2017 he was the lead mellophone in the featured small ensemble and received the Mike Korten horn award.

Bryan has taught marching band, private lessons, and masterclasses in the DFW area for several years. He is very honored and excited to join the SCVC brass team!

Native Texan and euphonium specialist, Ryan Farris, holds his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Texas A&M-Commerce. While in attendance at A&M-Commerce, Ryan won the brass division of the university’s Concerto Competition two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016. Ryan also had the opportunity to student teach at five-time Texas State Marching Contest and 2015 TMEA Honor Band winning Marcus High School.

In 2014 and 2017, Ryan marched baritone with the SCV A-corps, aging out as a member of the group’s featured small ensemble. He is very excited to join the Cadet Corps’ educational team for what is sure to be an amazing season!

Skyler is a freelance trombonist and teacher based in San Diego, CA. He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Trombone Performance from San Diego State University, where he performed with the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Aztec Trombone Choir, and New Music Ensemble. Outside of college, Skyler regularly performs with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, City Ballet Orchestra of San Diego, Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra, and a handful of chamber and solo settings on trombone, bass trombone and euphonium.
Currently student-teaching at Mira Mesa High School, Skyler continues to work with dedicated students and learn from some of the top educators in Southern California. He spent three years as a marching instructor for Westview High School, guiding them to a high visual award at their 2018 championships. In addition, Skyler has taught low brass at Mt. Carmel High School and Westview High School, and he maintains an active studio of private trombone and euphonium students.
Skyler spent one year with the Vanguard Cadets and four years with the Santa Clara Vanguard, aging out in 2018 as a baritone soloist and a DCI World Champion. Excited to return to the home team, he is ready to facilitate an enriching and unforgettable experience for the next generation of Santa Clara.

Johnny R. Erdman is the Music Director at Santa Clara High School in Santa Clara, CA where his role includes teaching choir, string orchestra, symphony orchestra, jazz band, and concert band as well as the marching band. He received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education at San Jose State University and played euphonium in the Wind Ensemble. During this time, Mr. Erdman studied in the trombone studio with Thomas D. Hornig. Mr. Erdman has been active in Drum Corps International, starting out as a performing member in the Vanguard Cadets in 2006 as well as the Santa Clara Vanguard from 2007– 2010. Mr. Erdman went on to serve on the administrative staff for the Boston Crusaders (Boston, MA) from 2013-2014, as well as the brass staff for the Blue Devils B (Concord, CA) from 2015-2016.

Jason Kneebone is the Instrumental Music Director at Mountain View High School. Jason received his Bachelor’s degree in Trombone Performance from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2005 and completed the Music Education credentialing program at San José State University in 2007.
Jason was a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard for three seasons and has six years of experience instructing visual and brass technique with the Vanguard Cadets. Jason enjoys playing Trombone with A Touch of Brass Big Band and the Nova Vista Symphony.

Jesus Sanchez is an active percussion educator and performer from Southern California.

From the age of 14 Jesus has been involved with numerous marching band’s and Drum Corps. Jesus joined the Vanguard Cadets in 2010 and later moved up to join the Vanguard A corps for the 2011 season and aged out in 2012 where he was awarded the “Golden Foot” award and “Spirit of Art Velarde” award. He was also a member of the 4-time Winter Guard International World Champion Riverside Community College winter drumline from 2009-2013 where he served as section leader for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Jesus is currently a performer in the Disneyland Resort’s “Soundsational” Parade and Disneyland Band and has also appeared in numerous television shows such as The Office.

Jesus has taught POW percussion in 2014, Vanguard Winter Percussion 2015-2016 and Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from 2013-2017. Jesus is currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Jazz Studies at California State University Fullerton.

David Medina is a percussion technician for the Vanguard Cadets. He is in his eleventh year evangelizing the cymbal techniques of how to perform in traditions of the Vanguard way. Medina also spent 2010 DCI season instructing with the Santa Clara Vanguard.

A member of the 2005 & 2006 Santa Clara Vanguard, marching with the vaunted cymbal line, Medina enjoyed his time on the field. In his age-out season in ‘06, Medina, as part of the cymbal ensemble won DCI Individual & Ensemble (I&E) competition held before the start of Finals Week competitions in Madison, WI.

When not on staff with Vanguard Cadets, Medina has worked with Homestead High School Marching Band and Winter Percussion in Cupertino, CA, since 2008, instructing his beloved instrument, the cymbals.

When she is not teaching her color guard students, Jenny is a freelance writer. She has her B.A. in Literary Journalism from the the University of California, Irvine and currently contributes to several outlets, including Winter Guard International.

Jenny has loved her time with the Vanguard organization in her capacities as both a performer and educator. She is thrilled to be continuing to serve as Color Guard Caption Manager for the 2017 season and Vanguard’s 50th Anniversary!

Brianne Risa Tomas is an alumni of the Vanguard Organization. After performing with Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, she concluded her drum corps journey at the Vanguard A-Corps in 2012. Her love for the organization and activity continued on to the winter seasons where she also performed with the Santa Clara Vanguard Winterguard (2013-2016). She holds her B.A. in Sociology and minor in Dance from the University of Las Vegas, NV.
Brianne began her teaching career with various high schools around the Las Vegas Valley and is presently on staff at Las Vegas’ premiere Open Class Winter Guard, 702 Independent. She has recently re-located to the Southern California area and teaches at Aliso Niguel HS. She has also been on staff at Pacific Crest since 2014. Brianne is excited to return for her second year with Vanguard Cadets.

Colby is from Tollhouse, a small town in California’s Sierra Nevada foothills. He holds an undergraduate degree in Music Education (BA) from California State University, Fresno and a Masters of Music Education with a Focus in Wind Conducting (MM) from The University of Massachusetts.

Colby marched euphonium in the Santa Clara Vanguard for 3 years, from 2010-2012. In 2013 he began working during the summertime as a staff member for the Vanguard & Vanguard Cadets. In 2017, Colby lead the Visual Caption for the Vanguard Cadets, winners of the Open Class “Best Visual Performance” award and the 2017 Open Class Championship.

Since the Fall of 2016, Colby has held the positions of Band Director, Music Teacher, & Performing Arts Department Chair at William C. Overfelt High School in San Jose, CA. Colby teaches classes in Percussion, Piano, & Guitar in addition to conducting the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, & Royal Pep-Band.

Additionally, Colby has worked as a drill writer and visual consultant for many California band programs: Clovis High School, Buchanan High School, Santa Paula High School, Fred C. Beyer High School, Yosemite High School, Arroyo Grande High School, and Evergreen Valley High School. Colby also consults and writes drill for the 400 member University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band.

Jeff’s marching experience involves four years of high school marching band at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale from 2004-2007, and one season with the Vanguard Cadets in 2011. He has worked with a number of marching bands in the San Jose area. From 2008-2012, Jeff was a visual technician at Fremont High School, later promoted to Visual Caption Head from 2013-2014. Currently, Jeff is the Visual Caption Head and horn choreographer at Lynbrook High School, where he has worked since 2014. This will be his 7th consecutive season on the visual staff with the Vanguard Cadets (2012-current). Jeff graduated from De Anza College in 2014 where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Journalism. Aside from Drum Corps and marching band, Jeff enjoys running, talking about sports and taking trips to San Francisco often to eat at Bubba Gump in Pier 39. He currently resides in Sunnyvale.

Tomas is an alumni of the Vanguard organization having marched with the Vanguard Cadets from 2010-2012, and later with the Santa Clara Vanguard from 2013-2013. He also performed with the organization in the 2017 Rose Parade. Tomas has served on visual staff for marching bands and winter percussion groups from 2011-2014 in the Central Valley, and since 2015 has been working in SoCal as a visual tech.

Carl grew up in the Bay Area and is currently pursuing his Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology at UC Davis. Apart from his academic goals, Carl has accumulated eight years of experience in the drum corps community between marching with the Vanguard Cadets (2011-2015), the Phantom Regiment (2016) and the Santa Clara Vanguard (2017-2018). Carl is no stranger to the podium either; he has served as the head drum major for the Vanguard Cadets for 3 years, has conducted at Phantom, and was the drum major for SCV for the past two seasons. Carl has also lead the Vanguard Cadets and the Santa Clara Vanguard to two Open Class and one World Class Championships, Respectively. He now looks forward to helping students reach their matching and leadership goals by sharing his knowledge and guidance on the Vanguard Cadets Visual Team.
