Santa Clara, CA- (August 2022): Vanguard Music and Performing Arts (VMAPA) is incredibly proud to announce that on August 7th, 2022, The Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets (SCVC) won the Drum Corps International Open Class Championships! Winning this title through Drum Corps International (DCI), commonly known as Marching Music’s Major Leagues, is the highest title a group of this caliber can receive.
After a two year hiatus during the pandemic, SCVC came back better and stronger than ever this summer. The 2022 SCVC competitive program, entitled, “SOMEWHERE NEW,” rang in their return to the field, telling a story of exploration and discovery through stunning musical and visual design components. Between June and August, they competed alongside the best open class drum corps in the world, traveling over 2,800 miles and performing in iconic venues such as Stanford University Stadium and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
“This summer posed a unique challenge for SCVC,” said Jeremy C Van Wert, Executive Director of VMAPA. “This was the youngest group of performers we’ve had at SCVC for a long time, and we were essentially starting from scratch going into auditions this season.” Of their success, Mr. Van Wert said, “We are so proud of the hard work and passion that SCVC staff and performers poured into their craft this summer. To say that they deserve the title of DCI Champion is an understatement!”
