Are you searching for an opportunity to become a better musician, performer, or instructor? Now’s your chance with the 2019 Vanguard Workshop Series! For select dates in March and April, we are bringing our staff to YOU, as they present workshops on a range of topics from brass technique and contemporary dance, to percussion performance and even conducting. You won’t want to miss out on these incredible opportunities!

LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP WITH SILENT COMMAND (March 2, 10AM – 4PM)
Learn, lead, innovate – that’s what you’ll do at this Silent Command Bay Area Clinic! Join some of DCI’s best drum majors, including SCV’s very own Carl Huang, as they coach you through what it takes to be a leader in the marching arts. This clinic is open to all high school aged drum majors, student leaders, and aspiring student leaders. Ticket price includes a day of instruction, notebook, catered lunch, t-shirt, and 1-month subscription to Silent Command Stream.

PERCUSSION WORKSHOP WITH PAUL RENNICK (March 14, 6PM – 8PM)
Have you ever wanted an inside look at how the Santa Clara Vanguard Percussion section tackles technique and approaches performance? Well you’re in luck because SCV Music Coordinator and Percussion Arranger/Caption Manager, Paul Rennick, will be coming in to demonstrate the Vanguard approach to drumming and musicianship! This workshop is perfect for music students and educators alike who are looking to widen their views on percussion performance and gain a better understanding of how we do things here at Vanguard.

BRASS WORKSHOP WITH MARK NICHOLS (March 15, 7PM – 9PM)
Join Mark Nichols (Brass Caption Head of the World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard) as he walks through the building blocks of brass performance, as used by the winners of the 2018 Jim Ott Brass Performance Award. The fundamentals used by these top-level performers can work in all locations and levels! Mr. Nichols has taught at all levels-elementary, junior high, high school, college, and professional and will use techniques that have proven successful for all learners and types of performers. The clinic is open to all brass musicians, instructors, and pedagogy enthusiasts, and participants are encouraged to bring their instrument!

PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP WITH WAYNE HARRIS (March 21, 7PM – 9PM)
This workshop, led by SCV Performance Coach and renowned performer Wayne Harris, is designed to provide students and instructors who are interested in the pageantry arts with an experience to explore theater improvisation, character development, and the creation of a narrative or subtext to enhance their performance. Together we will experience a fun, energizing and informative process that will enhance performance, leadership and enjoyment of pageantry arts!

CONDUCTING WORKSHOP WITH TONY RIVERA & DAVID VICKERMAN (April 14, 2PM – 6PM)
Vanguard’s new Youth Brass Ensemble Music Director, Tony Rivera, teams up with San Jose State University Director of Bands, David Vickerman, to lead this new one-of-a-kind workshop! Open to college music students and band directors of all levels, this workshop will focus on techniques and strategies to improve your conducting skills. Participants will have the chance to conduct the Vanguard Youth Brass Ensemble through two pieces of music and receive valuable feedback on their performance. Discounted tickets are also available for those who just wish to observe and enjoy!

CONTEMPORARY DANCE WORKSHOP WITH MICHAEL ROSALES (April 25, 7PM – 9PM)
From the mind who brought together Santa Clara Vanguard’s “Club Sound” hip-hop dance feature, comes a new and exciting contemporary dance workshop! Come join SCV Lead Choreographer, Michael Rosales (all the way from Miami, FL) as he leads you through the basic foundations of contemporary dance. From beginner brass musicians just looking to learn more dance technique to experienced and trained dancers – this class is for everyone!
