The Hero’s Journey is a universal tale found in every culture since the dawn of civilization. It is the adventure of The Hero, who goes out and achieves great deeds on behalf of the group, tribe, or civilization. These stories are often about moments that redefine us as individuals, and the struggle that can unfold when we unexpectedly find ourselves asked to become more than we imagined we might ever be.
The core of the Hero’s Journey is always about transformation. Our hero, like any person, company or institution, must shed the old and welcome the new in order to not just survive but to thrive. Those of us in pageantry understand well the transformative power of being part of a team.
As seen over the millennia, the Hero’s Journey can be used to tell the simplest comic book story or the most sophisticated drama for the page, stage and screen. From Homer’s Odyssey to Shakespeare’s Henry V; from Star Wars to The Hunger Games and many others, these stories are filled with the powerful themes of Destiny, Love, Forgiveness, Redemption, and Triumph.
In our story, the hero’s great adventure is nothing less than saving civilization. Along the way, she is challenged – physically, mentally, emotionally – using all of her skills and knowledge to survive. But, realizing she alone cannot be successful, she must work find a way to work with her enemies – or everyone shall perish. Banding together with newfound purpose, she leads a changed group of allies into the final test. She, herself, also fundamentally changed, can now transform the world around her.
greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.
The One is the powerful tale of a young woman, a reluctant leader, on whose shoulders rests nothing less than the very survival of her people.
