The February Camp for the Vanguard reacquainted the brass & percussion sections with the football field as they began learning drill for the opener of their 2006 production, "Moto Perpetuo". The staff and members were excited to be able to get such an early start on the visual portion of the show. Drill Designer Pete Weber's drill immediately grabs the "Moto Perpetuo" concept and runs with it, literally! Everyone that had a chance to experience the drill is eager to see what comes next. The corps had the chance to spend the February camp in Petaluma, CA -- a short distance from the famed California wine country. Not only was the camp for the members, it also served as teaching experience for the Petaluma High School band. From the moment the corps arrived at Petaluma High School, until the last bus left to head back to Santa Clara, the members of the Petaluma High School band watched everything the corps did and observed how they did it.
Band Directors Cliff Eveland and Andrew Sturges were great hosts. In an email sent after camp, Andrew said "We want to thank you for making this past weekend so successful and inspiring for our students. I think the Vanguard wildly exceeded any expectations that our kids had (as well as my own). It was truly an amazing group to experience. A discussion in each of our classes gave light to the students' amazement at the level of dedication, work ethic, and discipline that each of the corps members demonstrated, and we think that some of that will manifest itself in our own rehearsals. Thanks for being such a great example of what top-flight music and musicianship should be."
Petaluma High School was a great facility for the camp and the corps looks forward to returning in the future. Check out the February Camp Photo Album.
The next camp for the corps is from March 3rd – 5th. It is also the weekend of the Annual SCV Birthday Dinner, where the organization will be celebrating its 39th anniversary. The corps will showcase parts of the 2006 show to booster, fans, friends and family. Performances are scheduled to include the brass, battery percussion and front ensemble. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy and evening of great food and great music.
