Storytelling has been around as long as we have. All the ancient cultures - Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Asian - recorded powerful stories - even cave paintings reveal our need to pass along what's important. Our most compelling stories have always been about heroes - those brave few who rise up against oppression, swim against popular tide, or take the road less traveled - simply to do what is just and right.
The world's most universal hero is Everyman - that singular character representing the everyday woman or man placed in extraordinary circumstances and whose true power lies in allowing us each hope that we will fulfill our destiny.
SCVC’s 2012 production Heroes & Legends is set in an ancient civilization corrupted by bacchanalian excess and ruled by tyrannical emperor determined to destroy her enemy at any cost. But when one soldier realizes this proclaimed enemy isn’t so different from his own people and takes a stand against the Emperor and his mighty army it becomes a classic tale of courage, strength and hope.
The Vanguard Cadets design team has taken this timeless, universal story and woven it into a soundtrack overflowing with legendary melodies from the SCV organization's own historical repertoire along with several new additions - from classical composer Camille Saint-Saens to today’s epic band Coldplay - that you'll swear have been there all along.
The Everyman tale has rallied so many throughout history and even here in the 21st century, stories of regular people who became heroes and legends - from Odysseus to Martin Luther King - continue to inspire us to push beyond our fears and reach for a better tomorrow.
The 2012 Vanguard Cadets are under the direction of Steve Barnhill. Designers Nate Bourg, Pete Weber, Key Poulan, and Rob Ripley are joined this season by Casey Brohard and Peter Gomez to share creative responsibilities for the program.
