Vanguard Welcomes George Wozniak to Brass Caption
September 1, 2011
The Vanguard is excited to welcome George Wozniak as the corps' new Brass Caption Manager. Wozniak had recently served as the Brass Co-Caption Head for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. He has been instructing brass with the Bluecoats since 2003 and as Co-Caption Head from 2006-2011. He has more than 20 years of experience teaching in the drum corps activity.
Outside of the DCI activity, Wozniak was the Director of Bands at Kiski Area High School From 1993 to 2005. During that time he directed the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensembles and the Kiski Area Wind Ensemble. During his tenure as Director, the Kiski band won the Bands of America Class AA Grand National Championship in 1994. Wozniak continues to perform as the Principal trumpet of the Virginia Wind Symphony.
"I'm extremely honored and excited to be joining the Santa Clara instructional team and to be leading the Vanguard brass effort for many years to come," Wozniak stated.
Wozniak's first order of business will be to assemble a team of veteran musicians and music educators for the Vanguard's brass caption, including SCV alum Bob Higgins as the Assistant Brass Caption Manager. Higgins has worked with Wozniak for the past six seasons at the Bluecoats, where Higgins primary duties consisted of vocal/ear training and low brass instruction. His previous drum corps experience includes four years with the Glassmen brass staff, as well as performing on Contrabass with SCV in 1984 and 2000 Empire Statesmen.
Wozniak will be succeeding David Clemmer, who recently began his DMA-Wind Conducting degree at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Vanguard is indebted to Clemmer and his team for their dedication and incredible work this past summer, offering brass members an inspiring music education, as well as a consistent and detailed approach to their instruments.
Audition dates for the 2012 Vanguard will be November 18-20 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as a California audition on December 2-4 at Independence High School in San Jose, CA. Audition materials and any additional audition opportunities in the fall, will be posted next week.
